01 What PixIt is, and isn't
PixIt is a marketplace. We connect clients who need photography or videography with independent photographers and videographers — we call them artists — across the United Kingdom.
We are not the photographer. When you book through PixIt, the shoot itself is an agreement between you and the artist. Artists are self-employed. They are not our employees, we do not direct how they work, and they are responsible for their own tax, their own equipment, and their own insurance. What we provide is the introduction, the booking, the escrow that protects the money, and the rules both sides agree to play by.
02 Your account
- You must be 18 or over to use PixIt.
- What you put on your profile must be true. A portfolio must be your own work — passing off someone else's photographs as yours will end your account.
- One person, one account. You are responsible for what happens under yours.
- You can delete your account at any time from your profile in the app. What happens to your data then is set out in our Privacy Policy.
03 Booking a shoot
A client posts a brief with a budget, a place and a time. Artists nearby are notified in real time and can apply. The client reviews who applied and chooses. Nobody is assigned to anybody.
Jobs run from a £50 minimum upwards. The budget you set is what you pay: the artist's share is taken out of it, not added on top.
Delivery deadlines depend on the length of the shoot, and are counted in working days from the end of it:
04 Money
The client's card is charged when the booking is made, and the money is held in escrow — it is not the artist's yet, and it is not ours. It is released when the client confirms the files have arrived.
PixIt takes a 20% commission on each job. The artist keeps the other 80%.
Payments and payouts are handled by Stripe. To be paid, an artist sets up a Stripe account through the app. PixIt never sees or stores your card number or your bank details.
Once the client confirms delivery, the artist's share is sent to their Stripe account straight away. Stripe then pays it into their bank on its own schedule, which is typically a few working days and is not something PixIt controls.
05 Cancellations
Plans change. As a client, you can cancel at any time before your session starts and pay nothing. That holds while we are still finding you an artist, after one is booked, and even while they are on their way to you. You are refunded in full.
Once the session has started your artist is with you and working, and cancelling then costs 30% of the job's value. PixIt keeps 5% of that fee; the rest goes to the artist, for the time they have given you and the work they turned down to be there.
Artists are held to a stricter rule, because a client left without a photographer usually cannot find another in time. An artist who drops a job they have already accepted pays the same 30% — it goes to the client — and takes a strike against their account.
Cancellations are recorded against your account. More than five may lead us to close it — we look at what actually happened rather than closing accounts automatically.
If you are a consumer booking a shoot, you may have a statutory right to cancel under UK consumer law. Nothing in these terms takes that right away.
06 The pictures
The artist who takes the photograph owns the copyright in it. That is how copyright works in the UK for commissioned work, and we have not tried to change it.
What the client gets, once the job is paid for, is a permanent, worldwide, unlimited licence to use those images — personally or commercially, in print or online, with no expiry and no extra fee. In practical terms: they're yours to use however you like. What you cannot do is resell them as stock, or claim you took them.
The artist keeps the right to show the work in their portfolio, on PixIt and elsewhere. If a shoot is private and you would rather they didn't, say so before the shoot and agree it with them directly.
07 Conduct, and strikes
An artist who abandons a confirmed booking without good reason takes a strike. Strikes are not a scolding — they have teeth:
We may also suspend or close any account for fraud, harassment, impersonation, uploading someone else's work as your own, or anything unlawful. Where we can, we'll tell you why.
08 Keeping bookings on PixIt
In-app chat blocks phone numbers, email addresses, social handles and links. This is deliberate, and it is not only about our commission: a booking taken off PixIt loses the escrow, the cancellation protection, the reviews and any recourse either side has if it goes wrong. Repeatedly trying to move bookings off the platform is grounds for closing an account.
09 Reviews
After a completed shoot, the client may leave a review. Artists cannot review themselves, cannot buy reviews, and cannot delete one for being unflattering.
An artist who believes a review is untrue or unfair can challenge it. A challenge is read by a person at PixIt, who decides. If the challenge succeeds the review is removed and the artist's rating is recalculated without it. If it fails, the review stands. That ruling is ours to make — it is not a write either party gets to perform.
10 Insurance and liability
Artists are responsible for their own insurance, including public liability cover. PixIt does not insure shoots, artists, clients, venues or equipment, and provides no cover of any kind.
Because the shoot is an agreement between client and artist, disputes about the work itself — the pictures weren't what you hoped, the artist was late, the venue was difficult — are between the two of you. We will help where we can, and the escrow exists precisely so the money isn't gone while you sort it out.
We do not exclude our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. Beyond that, and to the extent the law allows, our liability to you for any job is limited to the value of that job.
PixIt is provided as it is. We work to keep it running, but we do not promise it will be available without interruption.
11 Changes, and the law
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you, we will tell you before it takes effect, and continuing to use PixIt after that means you accept it. The effective date at the top of this page always tells you which version you are reading.
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the law where you live.
